“Hybrids”, sculpture by Denese Oates
Thursday, 9 February 2012, Tues - Fri 10am - 5pm. Sat and Sun 9am - 5pm
Denese Oates employs copper wire and tube in the fabrication of compelling sculptures which evade immediate recognition or comparison. Her work utilises the compilation of leaf or thorn-like forms which often maintain a swirling upwards movement, replicating the effects of flame or plumes of smoke. Consequently, the artist’s use of metal as her preferred medium creates a tension between the materiality of her pieces and the immutability of her aesthetic intentions. At times the sculptures evoke the appearance of crowns or ritual headdresses, displaying a heightened sense significance and potential transcendence.
